Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League Ambitions Dented by 2-0 Loss to Aston Villa
Chelsea missed out on a return to the top four on Thursday evening as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Goals from Emi Buendia and Douglas Luiz in the second half put paid to Antonio Conte's side's chances of reclaiming a Champions League spot, as they remain in fifth position in the Premier League.

Tottenham put in a disappointing performance as they suffered a defeat at the hands of Aston Villa in the Premier League. Despite an improved showing in the first half, Spurs failed to keep up their intensity in the second, leaving them powerless against Villa's impressive comeback. The result marks two away wins on the bounce for Aston Villa under new boss Unai Emery, further solidifying their improved form.
Tottenham's Harry Kane came close to giving his side the lead in a lacklustre first-half, when his header was headed off the line by Ashley Young.
The deadlock was eventually broken shortly after the break, when a Douglas Luiz strike was spilled by Hugo Lloris - who was playing his first game since France lost the World Cup final - and collected by Ollie Watkins, teeing up Buendia to slot the ball home.
Luiz initiated and concluded the manoeuvre for the second goal, providing a pass to John McGinn, before accelerating to receive a splendid pass from the Villa skipper and delicately lobbing it over Lloris.
At the final whistle, Tottenham were jeered off with some fans expressing their rage in the direction of chairman Daniel Levy.
