Team Giannis Beats Team LeBron in NBA All-Star Game; Jayson Tatum Sets Scoring Record in Victory

Since the NBA began employing the top vote-getters of each conference to be captains and pick teams playground style in 2018, Team LeBron was the victor in the first five All-Star Games. However, Team Giannis ultimately took the win this time around, leaving Salt Lake City with a 184-175 victory over Team LeBron.

Team Giannis has closed the gap against Team LeBron after securing a victory, bringing their record to 1-2. Antetokounmpo expressed his happiness about the win, stating, I'm just happy that we were able to get a win, and I got one against LeBron.

Aiming for a target of 182 points - the leading team's total score from the first three quarters plus 24 - Portland's Damian Lillard sealed the win for Team Giannis with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

It was a three-pointer showcase for Team Giannis, which sunk a total of 29 shots from behind the arc, 10 of which came from Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum, eight from Cleveland Cavaliers' Donovan Mitchell, and eight from Portland Trail Blazers' Damian Lillard.

Jaylen Tatum won the Kobe Bryant All-Star MVP award after putting up a record-breaking performance. He scored 55 points total, with 27 in the third quarter alone, and was incredibly efficient with his shooting, going 22-for-31 from the field and 10-for-18 from long range. To round it out, he added 10 rebounds, six assists, one block and one steal.

Tatum, a big admirer of Kobe Bryant, obtained the MVP award for the first time ever. "It's an unbelievable feeling for me," said Tatum. "My maiden All-Star Game was held in Chicago in 2020 when they named the MVP honour after him and I just told myself that I have to get it before I retire."

The Kobe Bryant All-Star MVP Award trophy pays tribute to Bryant’s jersey numbers, MVPs, All-Star MVPs, championships, and Finals MVPs. Being able to don his signature shoe, break the record and take home the accolade of an individual whom he looked up to was undoubtedly a remarkable day. It's a hell of a day, said Bryant.

James threw a two-handed dunk in the first quarter by launching the ball off the glass with his left hand, managing to catch it himself before the slam.

The impressive feat was outdone later when All-Star Damian Lillard stepped up from half-court and swished his shot.
The Portland Trail Blazers star, who won the Three-Point Contest, beamed with pride after the shot.

"It is the result of a lifetime's worth of practice," Lillard said. "Ever since I was a kid I have been shooting balls from a far distance, even before I was good at it. My form was the same back then."

LeBron James, who had only played one game out of the Lakers' four before the All-Star break due to a sore left ankle, was unable to take part in the second half of the Sunday game because of a bruised right hand. Despite this, he still made it to 426 career points, extending his All-Star record. He ended with 13 points and four assists.

"I attempted to record a single chase-down block, but unfortunately my finger got caught in the rim," James stated. "Nevertheless, I'll be alright. There's no need to be anxious. Out of an abundance of caution, I simply had to take the remainder of the night off from playing."

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo sustained a sprained right wrist in Thursday’s victory against Chicago. Despite saying he was feeling well, he decided to not participate in the Skills Challenge on Saturday. The All-Star Game saw Giannis start and, after dunking 15 seconds into the game, he got a foul from Luka Doncic and removed himself from the match with 11:40 left in the first quarter, only playing for 20 seconds in total. He did not return to the game.

The All-Star Game saw charitable organizations benefit greatly, as Team LeBron and Team Giannis both donated $150,000 to the local charities they chose - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah for Team LeBron and Raise the Future for Team Giannis. Furthermore, the winner of each quarter donated an extra $100,000 to their respective charity and in the event of a tie, each charity still received a generous $50,000. All in all, Raise the Future will walk away with $550,000 and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah with $200,000.

The Indiana Pacers are set to host the 2024 NBA All-Star Game on February 18 in Indianapolis. This will be the second time the city has seen the event, the last being in 1985 when the West won and Ralph Sampson was MVP with 24 points and 10 rebounds at the Hoosier Dome.
