Maximizing Height Advantage to Limit Virginia’s Backcourt Strength in Duke Men’s Basketball

The Blue Devils will travel to face a tough No. 8 Virginia squad on Saturday after a difficult loss against Miami. With only seven games left in the regular season, this provides Duke with a chance to get ready for the challenging opponents they will face in the latter part of their schedule.

Beekman's consistent defensive play and Clark's forceful drives to the hoop are the foundations of this squad, and the Blue Devils need to maintain their consistent production in both areas in order to secure a win. Clark, a key part of the Cavaliers' offense, is providing an average of 11.6 points and six assists a game. Even when up against a solid Hokies defense, Clark managed to achieve a notable line of 17 points and four assists. To illustrate his skill, witness Clark as he gets past MJ Collins of the Hokies in a one-on-one situation, resulting in an effectively earned layup.

Virginia Tech's triumph over the Cavaliers displayed their height deficiency. The Hokies' shot-blocking and defensive capability wasn't enough to counter the height advantage of their roster. As Virginia did not have a real center on the court, they were susceptible in the paint. Kyle Filipowski, a seven-footer, knows how to make use of his size and length to bring about chances in the key and the Blue Devils will seek to exploit this mismatch in order to be successful. Witness Filipowski overpower two defenders for a simple layup inside.

The Blue Devils have some work to do if they are to come away with the win on Saturday. Too many turnovers had a negative impact on their performance against Miami, so they must focus on executing plays correctly and securely in order to spark their faltering offense. During the game, a careless pass from freshman guard Tyrese Proctor allowed Miami to score an impressive, game-changing dunk.
