Daniel Jones’ 2023 QB Status in Doubt after Playoff Loss to Eagles

22 January 2023, Sunday
Coach Brian Daboll, whose debut in New York seemingly marked a milestone in Daniel Jones' career, would not confirm when asked whether he expects the former first-round pick to be the Giants' starting quarterback next season. Even though Jones saw a clear improvement and was recognized by his teammates in 2022, Daboll did not commit to the young signal-caller following Saturday's playoff loss to the Eagles.

"Yeah, those talks will happen," Daboll stated to reporters. "We have a lengthy offseason ahead of us, so there'll be a proper time and place for it. But, tonight is not the time for those conversations."

A week after deciphering the Vikings defense in a 31-24 upset, Jones endured difficulty obtaining any fluency in Philadelphia, completing 15 of 27 for mere 135 yards and a pick in a 38-7 rout. He wasn't totally responsible, with the Giants offensive line, receiving corps and defense appearing outmatched all evening. And, to be fair, even if Daboll were impressed by Jones' performance on Saturday, the reality remains that the QB is slated to become a free agent in March.

Prior to their playoff debut, the Giants and Duke product Daniel Jones were reportedly close to agreeing on a contract extension, however, no deal has been reached at this time. Jones had a stellar year in 2022, throwing 15 touchdowns and only five interceptions while displaying one of the league's most efficient performances. Negotiations for extending his contract beyond this season are still ongoing.

Daboll was not overly effusive when asked to evaluate Jones' individual performance against the Eagles, instead saying that he had been "a consistent guy since he's been here". The coach downplayed Jones' growth overall, and implied that this was not something new.

"Well, he gave it a go," Daboll stated. "Everyone involved didn't come up to the mark - I'm on the top of that list. Daniel is a fighter. However, the other team had control of the game from start to finish."
