US Porn Star Deemed Unfit for Sex Crimes Trial
Ron Jeremy, a US adult film star, has been ruled mentally unfit to face trial for the alleged sex crimes levied against him. The actor was indicted on 34 counts of sexual offenses, including 12 of rape, spanning over two decades.
A court located in Los Angeles determined on Tuesday that Mr Jeremy, who had been in prison since his detention in 2020 and denied any wrongdoing, would not be able to face the charges due to his irredeemable neurocognitive decline. The 69-year-old had vowed to clear his name but was not present for the hearing.
Ronald Hyatt, better known by his stage name Jeremy, is a veteran of the adult film industry, having been active for over four decades. His prolific career is said to have included appearances in hundreds of titles.
However, Hyatt's actions outside of the adult film sphere have seen him facing serious legal proceedings, with prosecutors alleging he assaulted 21 women over a span of 23 years, from 1996 to 2019. The victims ranged from the ages of 15 to 51.
In 2020, charges were brought against adult film star, Mr Jeremy, following alleged offences which took place at bars and nightclubs in the Los Angeles area, as well as at his own home. A grand jury then issued an indictment the following year, using a tactic similar to that used in the case against Harvey Weinstein, which brought forth further allegations. Mr Jeremy has denied all charges made against him.
Court proceedings were put on hold last year after Mr Jeremy's lawyer declared that when visited in his cell, his client was unable to recognize him. Recently, the Los Angeles Times reported that Mr Jeremy was suffering from "severe dementia".
The judge declared on Tuesday and a lawyer expressed regret that due to mental condition, Mr Jeremy will not be able to go to trial and clear his name. A hearing to determine if he should be placed in a state-run hospital is scheduled for the following month.
