The Hitchhiker with a Hatchet: The True Story Behind Netflix’s New Crime Series

12 January 2023, Thursday
It's been a few months since Netflix dropped its latest true crime documentary and fans can rejoice at the release of The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker. This rollercoaster of a story follows Kai Lawrence, an internet-famous homeless man who was suddenly charged with murder shortly after his viral fame.

Back in 2013, Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker became a beloved icon almost overnight due to a news clip of him talking about how he had rescued a woman from being attacked. People saw him as a figure of good, clean, and pure vibes.

Sadly, just three months later, Kai was charged with murder and found to be the suspect in a homicide case. People started questioning whether he had killed someone in self-defence or had, in fact, committed murder. This is the entire story of Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker and the events that unfurled thereafter.

When people first encountered Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, he was known as Hitchhiker Kai. In 2013, he made a memorable appearance on a news bulletin in California. Little is known regarding his backstory.

Kai recounted an incident to a reporter in which he had to take down a man who had hitched a ride with him. The driver of the car had driven into a truck, pinning another man in between. The driver had then run up to two nearby women and began to attack one of them. Kai had quickly followed, brandishing a hatchet, and hit the assailant numerous times, killing him. The reporter later asserted that Kai had saved the woman's life. Kai's curt reply was simply, "He's dead, good."

The interview clip quickly gained traction on YouTube, collecting millions of views. A re-upload of the original video has amassed 3.1 million views and 6,500 comments. In addition to this, The Gregory Brothers gave the clip a special touch by autotuning it, turning it into a song that now has 11 million views.

On May 16th 2013, Kai's newfound viral fame came to a screeching halt. After a single night spent at 73 year old attorney Joseph Galfy's home, Kai found himself under arrest for Galfy's murder.

Kai claims he was lured, drugged, and raped by Galfy, who had offered him a place to stay for the night. This story had reached news outlets all over the world, due to his mysterious background as a hitchhiker, with his own appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel show prior to the arrest.

Despite his claims, Kai still faces the consequences of being accused of murder. Prior to this, he had achieved viral status, with his story being shared across the internet.

Kai was accused of homicide shortly after the incident, but his trial didn't come until much later. On April 1st 2019, he eventually stood before the court. He chose to represent himself and stayed firm in his position, yet the verdict found him guilty of first-degree murder, resulting in a 43 year prison sentence.
