An 85-year-old woman was fatally bitten by an alligator while walking her dog by a pond in Spanish Lakes Fairways, Northwest St. Lucie County, Monday afternoon. Firefighters recovered her body from the pond, located about 70 miles north of Palm Beach, Florida.

Officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, along with deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, were dispatched to the area after emergency calls reported an "alligator bite incident". Preliminary investigations suggest a woman was fatally attacked by an alligator, according to those who claimed to have witnessed the attack, according to FWC spokesperson Arielle Callender.

A contracted nuisance alligator trapper has taken possession of the alligator involved in the incident, according to her statement. The dog made it out unscathed.

Locals revealed to WPTV that a woman was taking her canine for a walk when the alligator snatched it. She attempted to rescue it but, unfortunately, became a casualty of the gator.

Sheriff Ken Mascara of the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office informed TCPalm, which is part of the USA TODAY Network, that they quickly arrived at the scene. They then recovered the victim's body and placed surveillance on the alligator around the lake with the help of their helicopter and crews. To aid the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission trapper in identifying the alligator, they aided in the endeavor to drag it out of the water. Mascara expressed his condolences for the deceased victim's loved ones and the Spanish Lakes residents who saw the attack.

Deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office arrived around 2:30 p.m. to assist wildlife authorities in an investigation into the death of an alligator that had been hooked and dragged out of a pond. The woman involved in the incident was not identified. Any further comment on the matter was deferred to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
